“Papa, what took you so long?” Emma asked, seeing them.

“You two came together?” Ragan asked beside Emma. Ricky could tell by the glint in her eye she knew they got sidetracked.

River ran a hand through his hair. “Red in there, huh?”

“How can you tell?” Ricky glanced at the closed door leading to one of the mansion’s numerous private dining rooms.

Usually, most of the Vivaldi ate together in the main hall, but not tonight. At least among a crowd, the chances of Red acting out of control seemed unlikely, because he’d lose the respect of his men. According to Ragan, Red had been losing that because of the brutal tactics he employed against the Vivaldi’s rival crime families.

“Red is the Rex, the equivalent of an alpha of a wolf pack. All lions in the pride are connected to him.” River grimaced, then looked down at Emma. “How are you feeling, sweetheart.”

“Hungry. Really hungry,” Emma added.

Ricky pulled his daughter into a hug. Emma frowned at him. “You look very pretty in your dress, baby.” To River, he said, “Let’s get this over with.”

“Considering Red can hear us, we should go in,” Ragan suggested.

She opened the door. Despite Ricky’s apprehension, his stomach grumbled at the spread prepared for them. Red Vivaldi sat, not surprisingly, at the head of the table, scowling. The guy didn’t seem capable of smiling. Standing at the corner of the room were two unfriendly looking guards. The other two guests surprised Ricky. A man and woman, both golden-haired and green-eyed, so it hadn’t been hard to guess they were also River’s siblings.

“Ren and Charity?” River asked with surprise.

Ricky heard about the two River named. Like Ragan, they had taken werewolf mates who used to be part of a rival crime family. Now, House Scavos, the third of the ruling power in Stocoma City, was in an alliance with the Vivaldi thanks to those marriages. Ricky took it upon himself to learn Politics 101, since they were temporarily living with River and his family.

“Ricky, this is my twin brother Ren, and that’s our younger sister Charity,” Ragan introduced. Noticing Ren was carrying a sleeping baby, Emma squealed in delight.

“Baby!”

“Careful, Emma. She doesn’t look like a year old yet,” Ricky reminded her. He gave Ren and Charity an apologetic look. “Nice to meet you folks.”

“This is fucking blackmail,” Red muttered.

River sighed. “A family dinner isn’t blackmail, brother.

They took their seats. Ricky sat between Ragan and Ren.

“I’ve heard you’ve raised Emma on your own. That’s impressive,” Ren told Ricky. Ricky could instantly draw similarities between the twins. He also formed an instant connection to Ren, after learning he recently had to go through a male pregnancy.

“My mate wants another cub, but I told him if he wants another, he should try carrying another life form inside him for months,” Ren was saying. “That shut him up good enough.”

Ren grinned at Emma and taught her how to hold his newborn baby girl properly.

“Are you sure?” Ricky asked.

Ren snorted. “Don’t worry. Besides, you should know shifter cubs are durable little tykes.
